Uses & indications
Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces, which allows irritated tissue to heal.
It is prescribed for conditions such as:
- Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and erosive oesophagitis
- Gastric and duodenal ulcers
- Protection of the stomach lining during long-term NSAID use
- Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and other acid hypersecretion states

How to use / dosage
Take exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The information below describes typical use only and does not replace a prescription.
- Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not crush, chew or split it - the enteric coating is what protects the drug from stomach acid.
- Usually taken once daily, about 30-60 minutes before a meal.
- Complete the full course even if symptoms improve early.
- Do not increase the dose or extend the course without medical advice.
Side effects
Most people tolerate pantoprazole well. Effects that may occur include:
- Headache, dizziness
- Diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence
- Nausea or abdominal discomfort
- Dry mouth, skin rash
Seek medical attention promptly for severe or watery diarrhoea, a rash with blistering, unusual muscle cramps or an irregular heartbeat, marked tiredness, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
Warnings & precautions
Prescription only (Schedule H). Not for self-medication.
- Tell your doctor about liver disease, osteoporosis, or low magnesium or vitamin B12 levels.
- Long-term or high-dose use has been associated with reduced magnesium and vitamin B12 absorption and, in some studies, a higher fracture risk.
- PPIs can interact with medicines including methotrexate, warfarin, clopidogrel, atazanavir, digoxin and ketoconazole. Share your full medicine list.
- Persistent symptoms should be investigated - acid suppression can mask a more serious underlying condition.
- Discuss use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding with your doctor.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
